I still can't believe it, and I know you won't either, but here's Esquivel's second mexican album (Correct me if I'm wrong).

I would never imagined myself saying this, BUT....
This album is presented in glorious MONO.....
Yes...I'm not kidding, the master, the king of Stereo, in MONO?
I'm sorry...I didn't mean to dissapoint you, but that's the truth, so if you want to download this album out of curiosity, that's OK. BUT you know what?
I don't mind, because Esquivel! is Esquivel! and he can do whatever he wants!!!!!...
He ain't no Burger King, he ain't no Don King, he ain't King David, he's just King of Stereo....
So enjoy the king of stereo in mono........
And Here's The Track List:
Side A:

A: Primer Movimiento (Allegro)
B: Segundo Movimiento (Adagio)
C: Tercer movimiento (Allegretto)
02 - La Bikina
03 - Agua De Beber

I can't hardly wait for more Esquavel, he's the tops.
I Can't wait! I love Juan Garcia more than any other musician/composer.
Keep up the good work with this blog!
Muchos Huevos!
What a fantastic cover! Let me know if you ever make t-shirts.
I would even enjoy Esquivel on eight track (mine still works).
I look forward to hearing the album, stereo or not, but really, thanks for the SWEET new album covers! Not only will my screen saver be even more enjoyable, but I was reminded of the beauty that is Carlos and Jose. Thanks
On a side note, is there a Spanish version of the name Ted? You know, Jose-Joseph kind of thing? Just wondering.
Actually, I don't think this album was ever released in Stereo. He did a few mono albums in Mexico before he unleased the stereo RCA albums.
Regardless, it's awesome and a rare find!
Thanks!
This is after his American LPs, probably '63. Also, the electric piano sounds like a Fender Rhodes, not a Wurlitzer. And the keyboard parts have a little jazzier feel on the songs where he uses it.
On second thought, after hearing the little Rock number at the end, I have a feeling the recording is later; maybe '65. Anyone know?
I thought it was late 50's
"Agua De Beber" and "Surfboard" are Jobim tunes which he himself recorded in '63. As an album title "Esuivel Actual" goes with the mid 60s feeling of being "with it" like "Beach Boys Today", "Rolling Stones Now" and "Beatles 65." The song "Question Mark" has that wide open pop sound of a Tony Hatch production (Petula Clarke).
duh! jeje.

I believe this is the Mexican equivalent to Esquivel's 1967 album The Genius of Esquivel.
I have been searching for a copy of it for a few years now. It is indeed sad that this is in mono, but I'll take it! Thank you!
Congratulations, this is an amazing blog, only one cuestion, ¿Por qué no escribe ud. en español?
A great blog!! Thanks
just discovered your blog
its fantastic!
I have a couple questions for you.
about 'Malaguena Salerosa' - if you know
what i was wondering is:
1 - do you know who the woman is who is singing on esquivel's version of this track?
2 - do you know of any other versions which are as brilliant and enigmatic as this one?
and
3 - can you suggest any other performers who are as powerful and captivating as this person, primarily from south america?
I know of Tita Merello, who is brilliant (any others?)
also, any great quirky versions of mexican or or other south american tracks?
thanks mr a

I believe this came out in 1966 as mentioned here:

Nice blog, In enjoyed it.
My god, amazing blog, amazing music.
To answer some of the questions about this album - it was first released in Mexico, in both mono and stereo, in 1966; it was, however, recorded in Los Angeles. It was released in the US as "The Genius Of Esquivel" in 1967, his first release there after being dropped by RCA in 1962. The musicians on this were his "Sights & Sounds Of Esquivel!" band, who played at the Stardust lounge in Las Vegas for 10 years, from '63-'73 (with a few changes in personal). The singer on "Malaguena Salerosa" is Maria Caruso (the band always featured 4 female vocalists, of different nationalities. Esquivel's 3rd wife, Yvonne de Bourbon, was in the group for most of its existence).
Esquivel released 3 albums in Mexico in the late 1950's (and numerous 78's before that, dating back to 1946), making this his 4th Mexican album, before moving to the US in 1958. His US RCA albums were all released in Central & South America, from Mexico to Argentina. His last RCA, "Esquival '68" was only released in those countries, and not in the US. Esquivel's rarest record is his 1969 "El Sonido de Las Vegas"on the Mexican label Orfeon, a 4 song EP also released as 2 45's. I've tried for years to track down the master tapes and reissue these tracks, but they appear to be lost. Sadly, they were only released in mono. These tracks were recorded in Mexico City. Esquivel himself didn't even have these records in his collection! Be on the lookout for them (the EP has a picture sleeve, but the 45's are in plain white sleeves)
Saludos
