It's not the end....

Well my friends I think I owe you an explanation for my long absence from mexicovers, the thing is that I got a full time job a little more than 2 years ago so it became imposible to keep up with all the work that this place needs, I was used to upload 1 album per week, you can say it's an easy job but it really isn't, first I had to buy the record, then clean it, make the transfer to my computer, clean the audio, scan the covers and so on....the process from start to finish took me almost 3 days (95% of the albums here were done that way).

I once envisioned this place to be like a starting point and a reference to all things mexican, specially retro design and vintage mexican music, in order to give people from other cultures a glimpse of what mexican culture USED to be, you know... there was really a time when we had good music, good films, great design and a great culture overall.

Anyways, the sad thing here is that I had a series of (computerly speaking) tragedies:

My hard disks were getting full so I decided to buy a 1Tb Seagate Hard disk to back up everything I had "dowloaded" back from 6 years ago, hard to get vinyl transfers, movies, family pictures, etc., etc.
The new 1Tb disk was defective, so I lost the data 3 days later (data means E-VERY-THING I-HAD).
Decided to replace the faulty disk and got a new one, but at that very same time I was moving from my old house to a new one and found out (the hard way), that the electrical wiring was faulty, so one day I came back from work to find everything plugged in was blown.
I'm using a live CD (KANOTIX) right now, but my hard disks are gone, I don't wan't mexicovers to disappear, but at the moment there's nothing much I can do. So until more prosper times, I'll go idle for a while.
Come back soon, I intend to keep alive and update this place in the not so distant future.
I'll try to answer the mail.

Los Locos Del Ritmo - Rock - 1960

Rock!

Los Locos del Ritmo were one of Mexico's pioneering rock bands. This was their first album which was recorded in one night, but the quality is great, my favourite song is track number 2, La Cucaracha.
Back in those times, mexican rock bands played mostly covers of american rock songs, but Los Locos del Ritmo managed to play some original compositions, which were not bad at all.

Here's a great album full of danceable songs, there's no info on who the "Monster" Orchestra or Mr. Angel "Chino" Flores were, but as always the important thing is the music, and the music is great. So there's no excuse for not having this album.

If you take a closer look at the label on the album, the "CORO" logo is identical with the "RCA" logo.....but I don't know if they were related or if it they where just a bad copy.....

¡Por fin! llegó el disco que estábas esperando, el disco que has buscado toda tu vida y nunca lo has podido encontrar, incluye la canción que siempre has querido saber como se llama y nunca te lo han dicho.

Lo mas seguro es que no reconozcas la portada, ni el grupo ni nada de nada, pero si eres un treintón como el sr. mexicant, entonces este disco es para ti.

El grupo se llama Quartz, el disco lleva el mismo nombre y la canción 1 también, bueno ¿y cual es esa canción? se preguntarán ustedes, pues nada mas y nada menos que es la que salía en la Carabina de Ambrosio, esa que bailaba Gina Montes y que durante toda mi vida me había preguntado como demonios se llamaba esa canción, por cierto, la canción viene sin la edición que le hicieron para el programa, ésta dura 13 minutos.

Gracias a San eBay, se pudo conseguir el disco, ¡el vinil venía aun sellado!, así que la calidad de la grabación es excelente, no tiene hiss, ni pops, ni nada, por lo que por primera vez el sr. mexicant ha decidido, además de subir el disco de la manera tradicional, agregar el archivo en formato FLAC.

Si deseas bajar los archivos FLAC tienes que bajar las 2 partes para poder descomprimir, y están aquí y aquí.

Back in the early 80's, there was a TV show called "La Carabina de Ambrosio", it was one of the best comedy shows ever produced in mexican TV, the show intro featured a gorgeous dancer called Gina Montes, who danced along a very catchy (and edited) instrumental disco song, which for years and years I tried to track down, it was impossible to get it because there where no credits shown. Thanks to the internet and eBay, el sr. was finally able to get the album (still sealed!), and for your delight the album was uploaded in FLAC format also.
Track number 1 is the song I was talking about.

So if you don't know the show, you might not like this post at all, so beware!

It's a well known fact that a lot of people bought an organ or tried to learn to play one, thanks to the influence of at least one of his 74 Albums, almost all by the name of "Juan Torres & His Melodic Organ".

When I was a kid, my mom used to have one that she liked to play whenever we had guests coming over for dinner (and now I can't eat anything unless there's some album of him playing in the background), and I guess many other moms (or dads) used to do the same, mainly because Juan Torres covered a lot of musical tastes, with albums ranging from classical music, to mariachi or international hits, as you would hear later on.

This was a request from someone who lost his only tape from Juan Torres, so in compensation here's a 7 disc boxset.

This is the first LP from the Command Quadraphonic Series, it was recorded as a demo (Persuasive Percussion Quad Demo Album), so people could try their brand new (and expensive) quadraphonic systems (left front, right front, left back & right back channels), remember that this stuff was pre-5, 6 and 7.1 systems we all know, so having 4 speakers was actually a very cool thing back in the good ol' days (well, I suppose).

No senoorr, el sr. mexicant is not dead (yet), it's just that he's been so drunk lately, he spends the whole day now in the cantina with the mariachis, he was getting bored with tequila, and wanted something new, so he tried some of the green stuff that the guy is holding, but found out is just green colored water, so now he's going for the cerveza....so cheers everybody!!

As usual, I bought this album just because of the cover, but the music turned out to be very good, and I don't have any info on who Don Nauro & His Caribbean Bar Sextett is or was, the only info I found is that he's from Venezuela.

The album's called Fin de Semana...En El Bar Tropical (Weekend at the Tropical Bar), and I just hope the bar did not go bankrupt for serving green colored water.

After a long hiatus, el sr. is finally back, this time presenting a very fine album:

Lara En Bossa Nova (this are Agustin Lara's songs bossanova style!), played by the "Orquesta Festival De Acapulco", yes you may ask now, who the hell are these guys?, and I'll tell you that this orchestra is conducted by none other than Cecilio "Chilo" Moran, considered one of the greatest mexican jazzists of all time.

Chilo Moran was born in Sinaloa, and went to Mexico City to study music at the "Escuela Libre De Musica", as a trumpetist he played in several orchestras, including the orchestra of Arturo Nunez, Ismael Diaz, Luis Arcaraz, Pablo Beltran Ruiz and Damaso Perez Prado, just to name a few.

In 1956 he and his friend Tommy Rodriguez opened the "Jazz Bar", the very first bar in Mexico City that played live jazz music.

OK, let me tell you the truth about this album....

I bought this brand new (still sealed) album just for the cover (as always), my intention was to put it on the Mexican Album Covers blog, but after listening to this superb accordion playing, I decided to give it a try here, I'm not a big fan of this kind of music, but this album made me change my mind.

This is a traditional norteno music band, very popular here in mexicantville, playing some polkas, but the difference is that northern bands use the button accordion, instead of the more "traditional" piano accordion, and use the Bajosexto, instead of a guitar....

So if you're in the mood for some excellent instrumental accordion playing, give this album a try, It'll take you just 20 minutes of your busy lives, but you'll just want to listen to it again and again, or your money back guaranteed....

And by the way...if you're wondering what a cabrito is check it out here...

Update: The Accordion player is Juan Silva (a true legend here in Northern Mexico, and his brother Adan playing the Bajosexto.

I got a request for a Gustavo Pimentel album some time ago, but the only one I have besides this one, is the album "Percusiones" (a great Mexican exotica album from the 50's), which was posted by the collector long time ago, and now the collector's site seems to have gone away....but I only have this album...(maybe I'll post Percusiones anyways later on).

Gustavo Pimentel was born in 1930, in Tabasco, and started playing piano at age 5; he was a very successful bandleader, leading his orchestra in a lot of Mexican TV shows, so he became a household name back in the 70's.
I don't have any info on this album, but it's from 1982, disco music was dying, and mambo was long gone, maybe he was trying to capitalize on the disco fever, maybe he was trying to "revive" mambo music, or who knows, but believe me this is not a disco music album per se (so if you're a "Disco Sucks" kind of person it's safe for you). Yes is a little bit influenced by that sound, so if you're interested in this weird mix, go ahead and give it a try!!.

The A Side consists of a 22 min. long mambo medley, played not the traditional way but instead played the disco way, you can even hear some wah-wah guitars and slap bass!

This is a very obscure album, from a very obscure band.....so rare that I haven't heard anything about them, there's no liner notes...nothing at all, not even a song in some compilation.
I found this album on my last trip to the local flea market, and the guy told me it was a good rock band (and I believed him)....
So let me introduce to you: Los Super Secos (The Super Dry??)...by the way, the back cover is autographed, and it mentions something about Acapulco, so I guess it was a local band, anyways, enjoy the music, and if by any means you happen to know something about them, let me know......

This album has a weird mix of styles, it has dixieland, it has bossa, one tango, some mariachi and Tijuana Taxi...but as weird as it may look, it actually sounds very well, as all the band members are skillful musicians, each plays at least four instruments, (that's what the liner notes says) and the banjo sounds great!!.

Here's an excerpt from the Liner Notes:

"This album takes the listener to the original period of this music, the atmosphere created by this recordings is powerful enough to infect happiness even to the most indifferent person.
In addition, it has the quality of creating a collective joy from the very first beats of the 12 selections included here.
This Orchestra Show made it's debut on June 13th, 1963, in the "Belvedere" lounge of the Hilton Hotel in Mexico City, where they had a contract for a couple of weeks but due to their success they managed to have daily shows for 5 straight years."

This is another album from the Odisea Burbujas Show, though this time Esquivel does not take part in it, so this is for Burbujas fans only....it contains a very catchy song called "Donde Estan Los Asteroides?", (Where Are The Asteroids?), which was a major influence (at least for me) in learning the correct order of the planets, so if you knew the song and had a test in school asking you to name the planets...you just had to sing the song and voila...next question....

But now the song is outdated thanks to those damn scientists because they decided Pluto is not a planet anymore :(
And now I'm not sure if I could pass that test again, because I can't get that song out of my head!!!!

This album follows the same formula as the other Burbujas albums, each character has it's own song, backed by the voices of Los Hermanos Zavala.

By the end of the 60's, everybody was growing tired of bands singing just covers, musicians wanted to play original music but still written and sung in english, so a new movement was born: La Onda Chicana (The Chicano Movement). The bands wrote and sung in english but merging elements from mexican and latin american cultures.

By that time bands like Blood, Sweat & Tears, and Chicago were very popular, so they had a strong influence here, as some bands had a very rhythmic brass section and some heavy guitars.

Here's Luz y Fuerza with the LP called We Can Fly from 1971, I can't find any info on the net and it doesn't have any liner notes...but the music is just great!!!

Los Locos Del Ritmo started back in 1958 under the name of "Pepe Y Sus Locos" (Pepe And His Crazy Boys) and participated in an Amateur Contest called "La Hora Internacional Del Aficionado" (The International Amateur Hour), winning the first place and a trip to the Original Amateur Hour Show, hosted by Ted Mack and won the second place.

Back in Mexico they changed their names to Los Locos Del Ritmo and recorded their first album between Dec. 1958 and Jan. 1959, but it was canned until 1960, because nobody was sure if Rock And Roll would be accepted (and could sell). The album became an immediate success and they went to record their (self titled) second album in 1961.

This is a 1971 reissue of their second album, and it rocks!!! listen to Estroncio 90, an excellent instrumental rocker.

Orfeon A Go Go was a mexican TV show sponsored by the Orfeon Record Label, in order to showcase their artists and promote Rock 'N' Roll music amongst mexican teenagers.
As I said in the previous post, Mexican Bands played mostly covers of English and American songs (with a few exceptions), so you will recognize the majority of the songs here.
And again there's more overdubbed cheers and whistles for your listening pleasure!!!

Track 12: Jamaica Ska is a real gem as Tono Quirazco was one of the first guys to introduce ska to Mexico (playing only cover versions), though he wasn't a major influence at the time.

Fiesta Hippie- La Fresa Acida-EL Klan-1969

Back in the hippie days, mexican "rock" music was just beggining to take shape, due to the big influence that our neighbors from the north has had on our own culture, so it was just a natural thing for mexican bands to play the popular songs at the time (American or English). There were bands who covered every song imaginable, playing the same rhythm but adapting the lyrics into spanish, or sometimes singing them in english (not a very good idea in my opinion, as not everybody could speak fluent english), resulting in some very weird sounding albums, like this one...

Introducing Fiesta Hippie (Hippie Party), 10 of the 13 songs here are played by "La Fresa Acida" (The sour strawberry), and 2 by "El Klan", and on the front cover you can see some of the stereotypes of being "hippie": everybody was making out or smoking weed... (ahhhh those good old times!!!)

This is supposed to be a live album, but if you listen carefully you can hear the same cheers and whistles all over and over again, so I just think it's overdubbed, anyway the music on this album does sound interesting...

Well my friends, this weeks post belongs to Mr. Floyd Cramer, a superb piano player, responsible for the hit "Last Date", I think you've all heard that song before (and if not, it's a good opportunity to do it now), and if you're wondering who's doing the background vocals on most of the songs, well, your first guess was right.. it's the Anita Kerr Singers!!! (or is it The Jordanaires??).... did I mention that Chet Atkins was the producer?

Floyd Cramer's first single record, a striking piano instrumental which he wrote called Last Date, was one of the "sleepers" of 1960 and sold almost a million copies. Up to that time, Floyd's piano had been heard as the instrumental "key" on many of the biggest hits to come out of the Nashville Studios.

Born in Shreveport, Lousiana, on October 27, 1933, Floyd began to show an interest in music when he was five years old and his family bought him a piano. He began playing by ear even before he actually started taking music lessons. His musical carrer started in earnest when he graduated from school and joined the Louisiana Hayride. Following his travels with the Hayride Show, in 1955 Floyd moved to Nashville and joined the famous Grand Ole Opry. Shortly thereafter, Chet Atkins brought him into the RCA Victor family as a hit recording artist in his own right.

I got this record as a gift long time ago, and the album cover is one of my favorites, maybe it's because the glare the trumpet has, or maybe just because it looks elegant and classy.

When a young man plays as fine a trumpet and leads as fine a band as Ray Anthony, he becomes almost a national hero. Here's another album in the long list of Beatles tributes. From the Phase 4 Stereo series here's Bob Leaper & his Orchestra, a 1964-65 album named Big Band, Beatle Songs, it has some minor scratches but the overall sound is great.
The Back cover is the same as the front, that's why it's not included in the file.

I just love that picture, the wigs are hilarious, but I just can't tell who's who ;)

I had planned to upload this on Kid's Day (we celebrate kid's day in mexico on april 30th), but I was away until now.

This was the most popular children's show back in the early 80's, it was called Odisea Burbujas (Bubbles Odyssey), and featured some talking animals: Patas Verdes (The Frog), Pistachon ZigZag (The Bumblebee), Mafafa Musguito (The Lizard), Mimoso Raton (The Mouse), commanded by absent minded Profesor A.G. Memelovsky, fighting the thrash loving always polluting Ecoloco (one of the best villains of all time).

They always traveled through space and time in their spaceship made of a Rock LP, a cup and a straw (called Popotito 22), meeting famous historical characters.

Well here comes the interesting part: Juan Garcia Esquivel wrote, composed, arranged and played the music, so there's plenty of zum zum zum's, guitars and a very famous choral group: El Coro De Los Hermanos Zavala (The One Hundred Voices of the Hermanos Zavala), and yes, it's an album for kids, but actually the music is very good (you'll like it).

Thanks to my friend DJAgustin for this one!!!

So if you're an Esquivel fan, this album would be an extra treat for you!!

In 1956 Pablo Beltran and His Orchestra recorded the song "Mexican Rock & Roll", Mexico's first rock song, causing a big sensation among radio listeners and opening the way for future mexican rock bands. Beltran also wrote "Quien Sera", later known in english as "Sway".

"Johnny Puleo is a "graduate cum laude" of Borrah Minevitch's famous Harmonica Rascals. His four feet, six-inches scarcely bespeak the marvelous sounds that he is capable of producing on his instrument.

A native of Washington, D. C., Puleo began his stage career when he won an harmonica contest in Boston. He then joined a comedy variety act, and after several years spent with the act became a member of (Borrah) Minevitch's Harmonica Rascals, with whom he toured all over the world. Puleo has appeared in two royal command performances in England and before the Presidents of France and the United States. In addition to his consummate mastery of the harmonica, he has an amazing knowledge of pantomime. His face and actions are controlled by a sixth sense of basic comedy, and his antics-when appropriate-draw laughter from even the most hardened of night club audiences. Johnny is also a dramatic actor of note, having starred with Burt Lancaster and Gina Lollobrigida in "Trapeze." All of this contributes to his presence on the stage, and it can be detected even in humorous moments of his playing sight unseen.

The Harmonica Gang has appeared at leading supper clubs throughout the United States, including the Latin Quarter, in New York and Miami Beach; The Riviera in Las Vegas; Palmer House, in Chicago; the Roosevelt, in New Orleans; and Twin Coaches in Pittsburgh. The ensemble's motion picture credits include “Trapeze”, “One in a Million”, "Always in My Heart," "Rascals" and "Love Under Fire." The group has earned kudos in numerous radio and television performances."

--This was THE second LP recorded in STEREO (in the whole world-- I'm not an expert though, so don't believe me--), it came after The Dukes Of Dixieland recorded the first stereo LP for the Audio Fidelity label, and yes, the music sounds unbelievably awesome--.

Great selections that draw requests and applause wherever the Band of Renown performs... now gathered here for dancers everywhere!

"Les Brown's in Town!" is the happy cry that goes up as soon as the band reaches its destination in a chartered plane or the orchestra's familiar bus. And soon after Les Brown arrives, he's delighting a huge crowd of local dancers with the wonderful sort of music that is in this album, ranging from smoothly styled ballads like Moonlight In Vermont to exciting originals like Checkin' In.

Dancers all across the nation gather to hear Les, for his band tours far and wide. The group has appeared in Hollywood at the Palladium more times than any other band, and he and his men often set up their stands in the top spots of New York City. As part of the Bob Hope Show, the band has also done a lot of traveling overseas. In its annual tours, though, Brown's group aims first of all at the crossroads, the small towns, army camps, and campuses of America.

One of the greatest kicks for the band is playing in some of these smaller places year after year. For example, there’s a town in the center of Kansas where the band has played a one-night stand for over eight summers. It's one of the big nights of the year, practically a town holiday, with people from miles around jamming the local veterans' hall where the dance is held.

Then there's a large pavilion in Indiana where, summer after summer, hundreds of couples dance under the stars to Les Brown's music. The places in which the band appears are many, and they are all different. But whether it’s a lakeside resort in Wisconsin, a ballroom in Oregon, or a college auditorium in Arizona, the result is the same: more renown for the band, more poll-winning popularity.

The group's busy schedule means, of course, that Les can't stay in town for as long as his fans would like. The answer to that, though, is right here. For with albums such as this, the music of Les Brown can always be heard in any town at all.

"Bahia is more Arthur Lyman magic from the fabulous Hawaiian Islands, the fiftieth state of the U.S.A. Far out in the mid-Pacific, these lush tropical Islands breed the unusual in all things, including pop music. You will hear in this album familiar tunes with exotic arrangements as well as new, intriguing melodies that are as different as the Islands themselves.

The Arthur Lyman group includes four very specially talented guys. Arthur Lyman plays vibes, marimba, guitar, ukelele, bongos and congas; Harold Chang is a percussionist without peer; John Kramer keeps the string bass rhythm, doubling on flute, and Allen Soares makes those gorgeous piano and glockenspiel sounds you will hear. All together they sound like a group of at least eight instead of four.

The group plays nightly in the Shell Bar on the grounds of Henry J. Kaiser's famous Hawaiian Village Hotel in Honolulu which has been enlarged twice to accommodate the many people who want to hear the Arthur Lyman group, still being inadequate to take care of the increasing crowds.

Shortly, Arthur and his group will be starting a personal tour of principal cities, including TV appearances, which will answer his many fans' biggest question, "Just how are all those sounds made?" The group will show you, and quite a sight it is! The recording itself was done in the acoustically perfect Kaiser Aluminum Dome, also on the grounds of the Hawaiian Village Hotel, allowing a beautifully translucent sound to enhance the voices of the instruments themselves.

To capture the full frequency and dynamic range heard in this album, AKG mikes and an especialIy built Ampex three track stereo magnetic 1/2" tape recorder were used. Later tape to disc transfer was done on a fully automatic Neumann (German) cutting lathe, using an advance design Teldec stereophonic cutting head capable of cutting on disc the truest stereo sound with maximum level. Your ears will quickly pick up on the difference. Pressings are pure virgin vinyl, painstakingly processed and quality controlled.

Beto Diaz Y La Orquesta De La Provincia

Introducing from Zacatecas, Mexico: Beto Diaz And His Province Orchestra, born in 1934, Diaz formed his first band at age 12, with such names as "Son Tropical", "Son Clave de Oro", "Son Caribe" and "Son Estrella".

In 1952 he had the idea of forming a band with some of his friends, with the main purpose of playing music for thier girlfriends in a serenata, and later came up with the name "Conjunto Juvenil".

They evolved into a more sophisticated band with the addition of violins, trumpets, guitars, and the accordion of Beto, and recorded their first E.P. under the name of "Beto Diaz' Juvenile Orchestra". After the album's success, the company sent them a telegram saying "You made it!, now it's time to record the full LP".

After the celebration party, Diaz tought that success finally arrived for an orchestra from the "provinces", as most of the orchestras from the time were from Mexico City, thus changing the name to the "Province Orchestra".

The album has some very minor glitches, but the music is great (a weird mix of swing, rock & roll and tropical!!!)

You have to listen to this one, it's one of my favorites. It's a CD, but the tracks are recorded directly from LP. Including mostly mexican artists (some very unknown), but also from Cuba (Ajo), Peru (Robertha), Brasil (Los Tropicanos), and Spain (Miguel Ramos).
